NPR: Northern Va. Tries New Model To Battle Sprawl

I have so many mixed up feelings about Tyson’s Corner. Living within 5 miles of the area, part of me wants to think a part of it as my home. The rest of me considers the area exactly what’s wrong with capitalism. Just one gigantic strip mall with not one tree for acres and acres.

Street with a view: On May 3rd 2008, artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley invited the Google Inc. Street View team and residents of Pittsburgh’s Northside to collaborate on a series of tableaux along Sampsonia Way. Neighbors, and other participants from around the city, staged scenes ranging from a parade and a marathon, to a garage band practice, a seventeenth century sword fight, a heroic rescue and much more…

I love sad songs. Jessica Lea Mayfield sings a lot of sad songs. Ever since I first heard “Kiss Me Again” I’ve been hooked.

The Apollo 14 Moon Trees

Apollo 14 launched in the late afternoon of January 31, 1971 on what was to be our third trip to the lunar surface. Five days later Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell walked on the Moon while Stuart Roosa, a former U.S. Forest Service smoke jumper, orbited above in the command module. Packed in small containers in Roosa’s personal kit were hundreds of tree seeds, part of a joint NASA/USFS project. Upon return to Earth, the seeds were germinated by the Forest Service. Known as the “Moon Trees”, the resulting seedlings were planted throughout the United States (often as part of the nation’s bicentennial in 1976) and the world. They stand as a tribute to astronaut Roosa and the Apollo program.

I’d like to visit a couple, do some serious tree-hugging. There’s one close by in Loudon County, but I think I’d have to do some trespassing.

From Design Observer: Julie Lasky’s commencement address at the Cranbrook Academy of Art on May 9, 2008. An enlightening and empowering and entertaining speech regarding our motivation in the 21st century.

In the 1990s, there was a three-word mantra that ruled many of our lives. It was Nike’s slogan, “Just do it.” …In this decade, we have a three-word mantra, too. It’s what Tim Gunn of “Project Runway” tells fashion designers who have less than an hour to assemble a dress out of bread dough or mismatched pieces of upholstery fabric. He says: “Make it work.” At a time when all hell is breaking loose geopolitically, we acknowledge that obstructive forces may be external to us. We recognize and even celebrate challenges before we hurl ourselves at them. This being America, however, we’re still expected to draw on our inner resources to overcome those challenges, and there are no excuses. Make it work.
