Final JMU Weekend
5 December 04
Fall semester is wrapping up here at JMU. I spent the last couple nights with good friends. Funny thing is I took more than 100 shots, and these five are the only ones that came out decent.DFA 79 at the Nanci Raygun
2 December 04
As promised, here are some pics from the show last night: Death From Above 1979 at the Nanci Raygun in Richmond, VA. The venue was actually pretty sweet. A bar filled with graphitti located close to Virginia Commonwealth University. The show itself was a Vice Magazine Showcase featuring NY hipsters the Panthers and retro-rockers Vietnam. Vietnam came on first. Alright vibe for ten minutes and afterwards it just got annoying when they were rocking away. Panthers came on last. I suppose they put on a good show, but I honestly couldn't follow the songs. I suppose if I had longer hair and wore my sport jacket, I would have got it, but alas, such is not the case.So in between those two duds, DFA79 played for something like 30 minutes. Two guys, Sabestian on drums and vocals, Jesse on bass and synth. My goodness, did they ever rock. They played just about every track from their album, plus a couple cuts from an earlier EP (I'm guessing). All at about 10 bpm faster than originally recorded. Jesse's got the bass shredding and Sabestian was really wailling. I was surprised how good his voice was, after playing show after basically scream-singing. That man is pure sex. I'm surprised he wasn't dry humped when he got on the floor during "Romantic Rights."
and like most of these outings. I spent a little while in a Waffle House, this time in Charleston. Check out that weird old guy. He kept on looking around like someone was watching him.
Another Harrisonburg Weekend
21 November 04
Another weekend, another couple of parties. The pic on the bottom left shows just how foggy it got Saturday night.
On a side note, I've been listening to Death From Above 1979's new album and it kicks ass. A lot. Everyone get it. Hopefully I'll post some pics after I attend their show at the Nanci Raygun in a couple weeks.
Jello Wrestling
15 November 04
I suppose everyone who goes through college comes out with a couple key stories about the "wildest night ever." Years afterward, it'll be these nights that they share with their friends and eventually tell their kids someday. Saturday night was one of those nights.
My friends had been planning a jello wrestling event for the past week. This would have to surpass the oil wrestling tournament which took place last year. During a meeting on Wednesday, we eventually figured out that Saturday would be the only feasible day for the event, the mindset being "this is crazy enough to work." The biggest challenge would be getting all the jello. I did a bunch of calculations and figured that we would need 100 gallons to fill the kiddie pool. Everyone pulled together and came up with 40 gallons, which, to my surprise, was just enough to cover the pool. and believe me, I've never seen more jello in all my life. Some estimates say we spent something like $200 on jello alone as a group.
The wrestling itself wasn't as exciting as some would imagine, but that's beside the point. Everyone at JMU was there that night. The Black Eyed Peas, who had just finished a show at JMU, even showed up for a little while. By the end of the night, I was covered in jello (which is as repulsive as one could imagine) from standing ring-side, holding up the pool and taking care of the jello situation.
Sorry, I don't have any pics of the girls smothering each other in the gelatin or a shot of me with Fergie or Will.i.am. But if you wanna see that kind of thing (I don't know why) check out some of my buddies' Webshots:
DC for the day
7 November 04
Saturday I took a day trip up to Washington DC with Erin. Turned out to be to quite a magical day. One of those picturesque autumn days where leaves fall with every breeze and you're comfortable just wearing a sweater. We did the typical tourist thing: just visiting the memorials and a museum before heading back home. But that's not to say we didn't fully enjoy it.
Be sure to check out the pic on the bottom right. One exhibit featured this Blackout Kit from post WWII. I thought the packaging was hilarious (I know its somewhat ignorant to make fun of stuff just for being old and dated), with the soldiers aiming their guns into the night sky. I doubt anything so offensive would ever be sold in toy stores today.
